How does the curriculum teach students to "read the room" and match their emotional energy to the specific mood of an event (e.g., joyful vs. formal)?
Students learn that effective communication is not just about what they say, but also how they say it. Through guided practice and discussion, students explore how tone, pacing, word choice and delivery change depending on the audience and occasion. They practise recognising the difference between formal, celebratory, respectful and light-hearted situations so they can communicate more appropriately and naturally in different settings.

Students may practise speeches and messages for situations such as:

  • Weddings and celebrations
  • Award ceremonies
  • Farewell speeches
  • Thank-you speeches
  • Welcoming guests or audiences
  • Graduation or achievement speeches
  • Short celebratory or appreciation messages

Topics and scenarios are adjusted according to the students’ age and maturity level.

Prepared speeches focus more on planning, structure, refinement and delivery over time. Students learn how to organise ideas thoughtfully and communicate in a polished and intentional manner. Spontaneous celebratory messages focus more on responding naturally in the moment while still communicating clearly, appropriately and confidently. Students learn how to think on their feet while maintaining composure and awareness of the occasion. Both skills are valuable and require slightly different communication approaches.
Leadership roles often involve speaking in different social and formal situations – welcoming people, addressing groups, expressing appreciation, motivating others and responding appropriately during important moments. These lessons help students become more adaptable communicators by developing confidence, composure, audience awareness and the ability to communicate appropriately in a range of real-life situations.
Traditional presentation classes often focus mainly on delivering prepared information clearly. Special Occasion Speech classes place greater emphasis on emotional awareness, audience connection and situational communication. Students learn how to adjust their tone, energy and delivery depending on the purpose and atmosphere of the occasion, helping them become more adaptable and socially aware communicators overall.
Teachers are trained to be sensitive and observant. If a student appears uncomfortable or emotionally affected by a particular topic or scenario, teachers will adjust accordingly – offering an alternative scenario, allowing the student to observe first or simply checking in privately. The goal is always to create a safe and supportive environment where students can learn and grow without feeling pressured or exposed. No student will be forced to engage with content that feels too personal or overwhelming.
