Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this skill important if my child isn't planning to be a public speaker?
Impromptu speaking is not just about public speaking – it is about thinking and responding in real time. In everyday life, children are constantly placed in situations where they need to answer questions, explain ideas, participate in discussions or express opinions without preparation. Developing this skill can support classroom participation, interviews, social interactions and overall communication confidence.
We introduce impromptu speaking progressively and supportively. Students are not expected to immediately give perfect answers under pressure. We always start in a low-stakes environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes. Teachers guide students using simple frameworks, prompts and encouragement to help them organise their thoughts more comfortably. Over time, many students become more confident responding spontaneously in a safe and supportive environment.

Rather than teaching students to simply “answer quickly,” we teach them how to organise their thoughts efficiently. Students learn simple thinking structures that help them:

  • Identify key ideas
  • Using simple techniques to pause without panic
  • Expand on answers logically
  • Stay focused while responding

The goal is to help students respond more clearly and confidently, even when they are unsure initially.

Activities may include:

  • Question-and-response games
  • Opinion-sharing discussions
  • Real-life communication scenarios
  • Timed speaking challenges
  • Group interaction activities
  • Guided speaking challenges with light structure

Lessons are designed to be interactive, engaging and progressively challenging based on the student’s age and confidence level.

One of the best ways to support impromptu speaking is through regular conversation. Parents can encourage children to elaborate on their answers by asking open-ended questions such as:

  • “Why do you think so?”
  • “Can you tell me more?”
  • “What would you do in that situation?”

Giving children time and space to think and respond independently can gradually help build confidence and communication flexibility over time.
